You are right Sara, but in India I've heard people calling the school teacher guru also sometimes, and by the way, the word guru in the West has been spoiled, while in India, the traditional educational system is getting lost. The word guru comes from a Sanskrit root meaning 'important, heavy (in importance)'.

How do you say teacher in Hindi? Teacher as in school is adhyapak. Male is adhyapak and female is adhyapika.
The word guru is not only teacher, this word means a lot of more, guru is bigger, much bigger, well guru is someone you give yourself to, that will liberate you and show you the path to god; he is a mother, father , teacher , brother, everything in one. It is a spiritual guide. Who teaches you the way of life. How you can attain the spiritual way even in your normal life. Guru needs not be educated but he may be wise.
Doesn't have translation. Guru is guru in english. Guru is a hindi word and it is accepted as guru in English literature.
