Morning routine

आज बुधवार इक्कीस मई २००८ है।

Today is Wednesday, May 21, 2008.

Meena and Nariandas are going to give some dialog that would be common at home on a work morning. Here is the dialog in Hindi. It is explained below with pronunciation help.

1) Nariandas: शुभ सुबह

2) Meena: शुभ सुबह

3) Nariandas: आप की रात कैसी रही ?

4) Meena: मेरी रात बहुत अच्छी रही।

5) Nariandas: क्या आप नाश्ता खाएंगे ?

6) Meena: जी हाँ, मैं नाश्ता खाऊँगी।

7) Nariandas: आप कब ऑफीस जाएँगी ?

8) Meena: मैं आठ बजे ऑफीस जाऊँगी।

Now let us break it down line by line.

Meena and Nariandas start off by saying “Good morning” to each other. This is “शुभ सुबह” (shubh subah).

1) Nariandas: शुभ सुबह

2) Meena: शुभ सुबह

शुभ सुबह = shubh subah = good morning

Then Nariandas asks Meena about her night.

3) Nariandas: आप की रात कैसी रही ?

आप की रात कैसी रही ? = aap ki raat kaesi rahi? = How was your night?

आप की = aap ki = yours (formal)

(आप = aap = you (formal). की = ki added after it makes it “yours”)

रात = raat = night (night is of feminine gender. This is why we used की above. “Day” which is दिन (din) in Hindi, is grammatically masculine. If we were talking about “your day” that would be “आप का दिन” (aap ka din).)

कैसी = kaisi = how (notice how it is कैसी (kaisi) and not कैसा (kaisa) which you would use to agree with a masculine noun..)

रही = rahi = was (can be used interchangeably with थी (thi))

Meena then answers that her night went very way.

4) Meena: मेरी रात बहुत अच्छी रही। = meri raat bahut acchi rhi = My night was very good.

: मेरी (meri) = my (it agrees with the gender of the noun रात (raat) which is feminine. If you were to say, “my day” it would be मेरा दिन (mera din) since दिन (din) is masculine.)

रात = raat = night

बहुत = bahut = very

अच्छी = acchi = good

रही = rahi = was

Next, Nariandas asks Meena if she will eat breakfast.

5) Nariandas: क्या आप नाश्ता खाएंगे ? = kya aap nashta khaaenge? = Will you eat breakfast?

क्या = kya = what (used for yes/no questions.)

आप = aap = you (formal)

नाश्ता = nashta = breakfast

खाएंगे = khaaenge = will eat

Meena, says that she will eat breakfast.

6) Meena: जी हाँ, मैं नाश्ता खाऊँगी। = ji haan, maen nashta khauungii. = yes, I will eat breakfast.

जी = ji = (sign of respect)

हाँ = haan = yes

you can think of जी हाँ (ji haan) as being equivalent to saying “yes sir” or “yes maim”. it is a polite way of saying “yes”.

मैं = maen = I

नाश्ता = nashta = breakfast

खाऊँगी = khauungii = will eat. (notice that it is in a different form. the one that ends in “ii” refers to a feminine subject, the other one refers to a masculine subject, mixed gender subject, or an in determinant gendered subject.)

Next Nariandas asks Meena when she will go to the office.

7) Nariandas: आप कब ऑफीस जाएँगी ? = aap kab office jaingi? = when will you go to the office?

आप = aap = you (formal)

कब = kab = when

ऑफीस = office = office

जाएँगी = jaingi = will go (notice that this changes depending on the gender of the subject. जाएँगी (jaingi) is for feminine subjects.

Meena then says that she will go to the office at 8.

8) Meena: मैं आठ बजे ऑफीस जाऊँगी।

मैं = maen = I

आठ = aathh = eight (8)

बजे = baje = o’clock

ऑफीस = office = office

जाएँगी = jaingi = will go (for a feminine noun)

“was” - the past tense of “to be”

The present tense of the word “to be” in Hindi does not change based upon the gender of the subject, but the past tense of “to be”, i.e. “was” does.  Today we are going to cover the past tense of “to be”.

Nathan said (being male) “I was in India.” in Hindi it would be “main bharat me tha.”  मैं भारत में था।
Meena said  (being female) “I was in India” in Hindi it would be “main bharat me thi”  मैं भारत में थी।
