#264 – Hindi sounds (part 1)

(Unfortunately the bigger size text looks good on the website but does not look right when people get it in their email. I will have to research it some more and try something different. Back to the letters words for now…)
Today we are going to look at the consonants and vowels in Hindi.
क (ka) ख (kha) ग (ga) घ (gha) ङ (ng)
च (cha) छ (chha) ज (ja) झ (jha) ञ (na)
ट (ta) ठ (tha) ड (da) ढ (dha) ण (na)
त (ta) थ (tha) द (da) ध (dha) न (na)
प (pa) फ (pha) ब (ba) भ (bha) म (ma)
य (ya) र (ra) ल (la) व (va) श (sha)
ष (sha) स (sa) ह (ha)
क्ष (ksha) त्र (tra) ज्ञ (jna)
Vowels:
अ (a) आ (aa)
इ (i) ई (ii)
उ (u) ऊ (uu)
ए (e) ऐ (ei)
ओ (o) औ (ou)
अं (an)
Notice that there are several Hindi characters that have the same English letters associated with them. These do NOT make the same sound. There are subtle differences between these characters that are difficult to represent in the English letters. I would strongly recommend that you learn the Hindi characters to avoid confusion caused by trying to write Hindi letters using the English script.
You will be able to understand these lessons more if you have the Kid’s Primer (http://www.ispeakhindi.com/2008/06/26/260-kids-primer-intro/)

Hi there,
Really love this site ! Still trying to find my way around, though.
Note: Didn’t you forgot (ri) wich is also a vowel… ? (ri) like in (ri)o de janeiro
@Shaista
hindustani is derived from hindi. Hindustani is also known as Surnami-Hindi . . .
Thank you very much
I stumbled upon this site just now and absolutely love it. I believe it will be priceless in my desire to learn Hindi. Keep up the awesome work admin – you are making a difference to us/the world bit by bit!
God bless for this good work….
ट (ta) ठ (tha) ड (da) ढ (dha) ण (na)
त (ta) थ (tha) द (da) ध (dha) न (na)
How can it be so? I mean are there two variants for the same letters???
They are different. The first row ट ठ ड ढ ण have the tongue touching the top of the mouth, right behind the ridge. They are called “retroflexive” because the tongue is turned back. These produce a “hard” sound.
The second row त थ द ध न have the tongue touching the teeth. They make a “softer sound”.
We have been working on developing new material around the letters. You can see it at http://www.ispeakhindi.com/category/series/letters-and-sounds/

wow this is new for me..I love hindi lenguage but i dont know nothing I am beginer..could somebody help me???
Great work on this site. I am somewhat more fortunate than some of the others who have commented since I learned Hindi in school and am using the site as a refresher on the letters and matras, for which it is very useful. My sympathies to those struggling with the different pronunciations, I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to try and get the different tongue positions right! But as someone who has learned two additional languages as an adult, it will come, just practice and stay positive!
