Aarti’s Introduction – line by line – part 1

Yesterday we heard from Aarti from the HindiGym.com site. Let us look at the first 5 lines of her introduction today.
Sentence 1:
आप सभी सुनने वालों को आरती का “हेलो” (hello) और नमस्ते।
aap sabhii sunne vaalon ko aartii kaa helo aur namste|
To everyone of you that are listening “Hello” and “greetings” from Aarti.
आप (aap) – you (formal)
सभी (subhii) – every single one
सुनने वाला (sunne vaalaa) – listener
सुनने वालों को (sunne vaalon ko) – to listeners
आरती (aarti) – Aarti
का (ka) – functions like ’s in English. आरती का means “Aarti’s” In this particular case, it sounds better to translate it as “from Aarti”
“हेलो” (helo) – hello
और (aur) - and
नमस्ते (nameste) – greetings
Sentence 2:
सबसे पहले मैं आप को मेरे बारे में बता दूँ, जी हाँ मैं आरती।
sabse pahle main aah ko mere baare men batee duun, jii haan mein aartii
First of all I would like to introduce myself, yes I am Aartii.
सबसे पहले (subse pahle) – first of all
मैं (mein) – I
आप (aap) – you (formal)
को (ko) – to
आप को (aap ko) – to you
मेरे (mere) – mine
बारे (baare) – about
में (men) – in
मेरे बारे में (mere baare men) – about me
बता दूँ (bataa duun) – tell
जी हाँ (jii haan) – yes (formal)
मैं (main) – I
आरती (aartii) – Aarti
Sentence 3:
मैं मुंबई भारत यानि इंडिया में पैदा, जन्मी और बड़ी हुई।
(main munbaii Bhaarat yaani indiyaa men paida janmii aur barii huii)
I was born and brought up in Bombay, India.
मैं (main) – I
मुंबई (munbaii) – Mumbai (city in India)
भारत (bhaarat) – Bhaarat (The name of “India” in Hindi)
यानि (yaani) – that is (like “i.e.” in English)
इंडिया (indiyaa) – India
में (men) – in
पैदा (paidaa) – born
जन्मी (janmii) – born
और (aur) – and
बड़ी (barii) – grew up
हुई (huii) – was
Sentence 4:
वंही से मैंने अपनी इंजीनियरिंग भी की।
(vanhii se mainne apnii injiiniyaring bhii ki)
From the same place I did my Engineering, also.
वंही से (vanhii se) – from the same place
मैंने (main ne) – I
अपनी (apnii) – my
इंजीनियरिंग (injiiniyaring)- engineering
भी (bhii) – also
की (kii) – did
Sentence 5:
अब शादी के बाद मैं सान फ्रांसिस्को में अपने पति और 2 बच्चों के साथ रहती हूँ ।
(ab shaadii ke baad main san fraansiskoo apne pati aur do bachchon ke shath rahtii huun)
Now after marriage I live with my husband and 2 children in San Francisco.
अब (ab) – now
शादी (shaadii) – marriage
के बाद (ke baad) – afterwards
मैं (main) – I
सान फ्रांसिस्को – San Francisco
में (men) – in
अपने पति (apne pati) – my husband
और (aur) – and
2 (दो do) – two
बच्चों (bachchon) – children ( in the oblique case because it is part of a prepositional phrase)
के साथ (ke sath) – with
रहती हूँ – [I] stay/live (feminine form).
