कि means ‘that’ or ‘or’. It is used to denote reason or to denote ‘or’ or to report indirect speech. It is useful for connecting to parts of a sentence together. “I was thinking THAT you would be coming.” See how the “that” connects the “I was thinking” with the “You would be coming.”? It is an important word to learn. This lesson shows several examples of using the Hindi word for “that” in a sentence.

Ladke ne kaha ki vah parson school nahin jaayega

Ashraf said that he wants to go to Mecca.

अशरफ ने कहा कि वह मक्का जाना चाहता है

Ashraf ne kaha ki vah Macca jaana chahta hai

I am glad you came here.

मुझे बड़ी खुशी हुई कि आप मेरे यहाँ आए

Mujhe badi khushi huyi ki aap mere yahan aaye

My book is with you or not?

मेरी किताब तुम्हारे पास है कि नहीं?

Meri kitaab tumhare pas hai ki nahin

Today you are going to Town or not?

तुम आज शहर जा रहे हो कि नहीं

Tum aaj shahar jaa rahe ho ki nahin

We saw that a few children were playing in the ground.

हमने देखा कि मैदान में कुछ लड़के खेल रहे थे

Humne dekha ki maidan mein kuch ladke khel rahe the

Sarala said that her brother was not well.

सरला ने कहा कि उसके भाई की तबीयत ठीक नहीं थी

Sarala ne kaha ki uske bhai ki tabiyat teek nahin thi

I cannot say whether they know me or not.

मैं नहीं कह सकता कि वे मुझे जानते है कि नहीं

Main nahin kah sakta ki ve mujhe jaante hai ki nahin

I saw that Hari was crying.

मैने देखा कि हरी रो रहा था

Maine dekha ki hari ro raha tha

I asked my friend how many days he would stay here.

मैने अपने दोस्त से पूछा कि तुम यहाँ कितने दिन ठहरोगे

Maine apne dost se poocha ki tum yahan kitane din thaharoge

Mother told me not to go in the sun.

माँ ने मुझसे कहा कि तुम धूप में मत जाओ

Ma ne mujhse kaha ki tum dhoop mein math jaao

Don’t ask me when this war is going to end.

मुझसे मत पूछो कि कब यह युद्ध समाप्त होगा

Mujse math poocho ki kab yah yudh samapt hoga

I heard from Surendra that many people had fled from Kurnool.

मैने सुरेन्द्र से सुना कि बहुत से लोग कुरनूल से भाग गये थे
