This lesson is the second of our series on learning the alternate ways of asking questions and answering while talking to young children.   Questions like “How old are you?” and “Do you go to school?” are covered.

If you want to ask : How old are you?, then you have to ask तुम कितने साल की हो ? (Tum kitane saal ki ho) to a girl and तुम कितने साल के हो? (Tum kitane saal ke ho) to a boy. You can also ask तुम्हारी आयु कितनी है?(Tumhari aayu kitani hai) or तुम्हारी उम्र क्या है?(Tumhari umr kya hai). If you are addressing this question to a group of children, then you can frame it as तुम लोगों के उम्र बताओ (tum logon ke umr batao) or as तुम लोग कितने साल के हो (Tum log kitane saal ke ho).

Children might reply as:

I am 11 years old. – मैं ग्यारह साल की हूँ (Main gyarah saal ki hoon)

I am 5 years old. – मैं पाच साल का हूँ (Main paach saal ka hoon)

I am 8 years old. – मैं आठ साल की हूँ (Main aath saal ki hoon)

I am 11 years, he is five and she is eight years old. – मैं ग्यारह साल की हूँ, यह पाँच साल का है और वह आठ साल की है (Main gyarah saal ki hoon, yah paanch saal ka hai aur vah aath saal ki hai)

Now, if you want to ask: Do you go to school?, then you have to ask: तुम स्कूल जाते हो?(Tum school jaate ho) to a boy and तुम स्कूल जाती हो ?(Tum school jaati ho) to a girl. Another way of asking the same is: क्या तुम स्कूल जाते हो ?(Kya tum school jate ho) to a boy and क्या तुम स्कूल जाती हो ?(Kya tum school jati ho) to a girl. If you are addressing this question to a group of children, then you can frame it as तुम लोग स्कूल जाते हो ? (tum log school jate ho) or as क्या तुम लोग स्कूल जाते हो (kya tum log school jate ho).

The various ways of answering this are :

Yes, I go to school. –  हाँ, मैं स्कूल जाती हूँ (Ha, main school jaati hoon) –feminine

हाँ, मैं स्कूल  जाता हूँ (Ha, main school jaata hoon) — masculine

Yes, we go to school. – हाँ, हम स्कूल जाते हैं (ha, hum school jate haim)- both mas. & fem plural
