It can be fun to learn Hindi by listening to some songs in Hindi.  Today, let’s continue to look at the “I Love India” song.

जब छेडा मल्हार किसी ने (jab chhedaa malhaar kisi ne )

It took a fabulous tune (malhaar raag) to

झूमके सावन आया (jhoomke saawan aaya )

make the rains descend.

आग लगा दी पानी में जब (aag laga di paani mein jab)

The fire lit on water

दीपक राग सुनाया(dipak raag sunaaya )

at the recital of the Deepak raga.

सात सुरों का संगम यह जीवन गीतों का माला (saat suron ka sangam yeh jiwan giton ka maala)

This life is a garland made of songs, the meeting of the seven notes.

हम अपने भगवान को भी कहते हैं बाँसूरीवाला  (ham apne bhagwaan ko bhi kahte hain baansuriwaala)

We even call our God ‘the flute player.’ [i.e., Krishna]

पिहु पिहु बोले पपीहा (pihu pihu bole papihaa)

The cuckoo caws, pihu pihu!

कोयल कोयल कूहु कूहु गाए (koyal koyal kuhu kuhu gaaye)

The cuckoo sings, kuhu kuhu!

हंसते रोते हमने जीवन की सब गीत बनाए(hanste rote hamne jiwan ki sab git banaaye)

In laughter and tears, we (Indians) made all of life’s songs.

यह सारी दुनिया अपने अपने गीतों को गाए (yeh saari duniya apne apne giton ko gaaye)

This whole world sings to their own songs.

गीत वो गाओ जिससे इस मिट्टी की खुश्बू आए (git voh gaao jis se is mitti ki khushbu aaye)

Sing the song from which the fragrance of this earth arises.

वतन मेरा इंडिया सजन मेरा इंडिया (vatan mera india sajan mera india)

India, my homeland; India, my beloved.

करम मेरा इंडिया धरम मेरा इंडिया (karam mera india dharam mera india)

India, my action; India, my religion.

N.B.:-

1) Hindustani classical music is based upon raagas and taals, each designed to affect different energy centers or moods. During the times of King Akbar, Tanzen, a renowned musician was said to have sung a song in Malhaar raag and invited rains. Deepak raag is supposed to create fire and hence was discontinued performing from Indian Classical Music in early 18th Century. Tansen formulated the raga Deepak.
