This is the first of four follow up lessons on the Feb. 20, 2010 episode Conversation with Sandeep and Meenakshi.  This one will be about asking about people’s names and answering those questions.  The next one will be about asking about people’s work.  The third one will be about asking if people are vegetarians.  And the final one will go over the parts regarding people’s preference for tea or coffee.

Before we get started, I wanted to point out that we have created a special treat for our Paid ISpeakHindi.com subscriber’s related to this.  We have broken up the conversation into 39 parts, which can be played individually.  Each line will be explained giving the text in Hindi, transliterated in the Latin script, and the meanings explained.  This can make it more convenient to understand the audio.  If you are paid subscriber, just follow this link:

Sandeep-meenakshi

Today we have Sandeep and Meenakshi on the show.

First I asked Sandeep about himself and his wife.  Here are the questions that I asked Sandeep.  (Find Hindi speakers to practice them with.)

आपका नाम क्या है?  (Aap-kaa naam kyaa hai?) – What is your name?

आपकी पत्नी का नाम क्या है?  (aap-ki put-nii kaa naam kyaa hai?) – What is your wife’s name?

आप क्या काम करते हैं?  (aap kyaa kaam kar-te hain?) – What work do you do?

आपकी पत्नी क्या काम करती हैं? (aap-kii pat-nii kyaa kar-tii hain?) – What work does your wife do?

क्या आप शाकाहारी हैं?  (kyaa aap shaa-kaa-haa-rii hain?) – Are you a vegetarian?

क्या आपकी पत्नी शाकाहारी हैं? – (kyaa aap-kii pat-nii shaa-kaa-ha-rii hain?) – Is your wife a vegetarian?

क्या आप चाय या कॉफ़ी पीते हैं? – (kyaa aap chaaii yaa ko-phii pii-te hain?) – Do you drink tea or coffee?

क्या आपकी पत्नीचाय या कॉफ़ी पीते हैं? (kyaa aap-kii pat-nii chaaii yaa ko-phii pii-te hain?) – Does your wife drink tea or coffee?

Eva left a comment on a episode from earlier this week called Related Verbs:

Hey! I liked this lesson, and I am generally very happy about having the chance to brush up my hindi for free:) only wanted to point out that the transcription of the last example doesn’t correspond to what’s written in devnagri.
Greets, Eva

Thanks Eva for your nice comments and for bringing the issue with the transciption to my attention.  It has been fixed.  If any of our listeners see something that doesn’t look right (or sound right) on our site, please let me know so that it can be addressed.

Christine left a comment on our episode from ealier this week called Cornbread

I’d love to see more like this! We build vocabulary and full sentences with grammar at the same time. I like the little asides too, like learning about wheat flour.

You are in luck.  That episode was part of a children’s book with many more stories that we plan to go through.  There will be more episodes like it this week.

Brent left a related comment on the episode called Fly which was from the same children’s book.

Nathan, Mr. Naraindas, and Ms. Meena ,

I’ve enjoyed these last two episodes in particular. Now that I can follow the basic sounds and structure of the words, it’s fun to see how the words interact with each other in these small stories.

Thank you,
Brent

Nancey left a comment this week on an episode that we had published last year about the letter saying:

I HAVE CHECKED OUT OTHER TAPES AND THEY DON’T PUT IN THE TIME AND PATIENCE LIKE YOU DO. I NEED TO BE WALKING AROUND LISTENING TO ALL THIS ON MY IPOD. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Yes, you most certainly can put these episodes on your iPod.  Three ways come to mind.  First, you can subscribe to our podcast in iTunes.  Use this for the address of the podcast: http://feeds.feedburner.com/ISpeakHindi

Second, you could click on the “download” link on the episodes you are interested in.  But that could be tedious and time consuming.

Third, if you are a paid ISpeakHindi.com subscriber, you can login and go to the paid subscriber’s area and download an entire month’s worth of episodes in one zip file.  This be very convienent.  Right now, Septeber 2009-January 2010 episodes are available in the paid subscriber’s area.  February will be posted as soon as we finish recording this month’s episodes.  If you are not a paid ISpeakHindi.com subscribe, it is a very reasonable amount.  Only $12 for six months.  That comes out to be only 2 dollars per month.  (Most people spend more on sodas in a week, surely learning Hindi is worth more than that.)  More information can be found at http://www.ispeakhindi.com/become-a-member/

We got two comments on the episode called “I’m Taller Than You” This was the one with pictures of Naraindas, Meena, and Christopher illustrating difference in height.

Jorie says:

Great lesson! It was easy to follow and the visuals were helpful. I also would appreciate more examples. There were more pattern examples given in English then in Hindi. This is a great site though and I’m so happy to have it as a resource!

The bike is cheaper than the car.

साइकल गाड़ी से सस्ती है।

(sa-i-kal ga-Rii se sas-tii hai)

The tea is hotter than the coffee.

चाय कॉफी से गरम है।

(chaay ko-phii se ga-ram hai)

I am fatter than you.

मैं आप से मोटा हूँ। (masculine subject)

(main aah se mo-Taa huun)

मैं आपसे मोटी हूँ। (feminine subject)

(main aah se mo-Tii huun)

(also note, that आपसे and आप से are both correct.  The post postposition can be written ajoined to the word before it or with a space.)

Erez

The photos are really charming – and are a great help for remembering the examples. Bohut Dhanyevad!

Thank you all for that feedback.  Please come by the website and rate the podcasts, leave comments and suggestions, and email me with any of your requests at nathan@ISpeakHindi.com.

There is a similarity between verbs of a related action.  For example, to laugh is हँसना and to make laugh is हँसाना.  There are a lot of verbs like this.

Here is a list of some verbs that follow this pattern:

सुनना (sun-naa) to listen सुनाना (su-naa-naa) to tell (to make listen)
मिलना (mil-naa) to meet मिलाना (mi-laa-naa) to bring together (to make meet)
देखना (dekh-na) to see दिखाना (di-khaa-naa) to show (to make see)
खाना (khaa-naa) to eat खिलाना (khi-laa-naa) – to feed (to make eat)

मैं हँसता हूँ। (mein hans-taa huun) – I laugh.

मैं उनको हँसाता हूँ। (mein un-ko han-saa-taa huun) – I make them laugh.

मैं सुनता हूँ। (mein sun-taa huun) – I listen.

आप मुझको सुना रहे हैं। ( aap mujh-ko su-naa rahe hain) – You are telling me.
