There are many languages that are spoken in India.  It will be necessary to be able to ask if people know Hindi.  Also, knowing how to ask “Do you know Hindi” in Hindi, is a good way to show that you know Hindi at the same time.

The grammar is a little different.  The phrase:

क्या आपको हिंदी आती है?

(kyaa aapko hindii aatii hai?)

Is used to mean “Do you know Hindi?”  But if you look at the literal meaning of each of the words, it means “Does Hindi come to you?”

This phrase is the same when asking a man or a woman.

There are several responses you might expect:

हाँ, मुझे हिंदी आती है।

(haan, mujhe hindii aatii hai)

Yes, I know Hindi.  (Yes, Hindi comes to me.)  (Same phrase can be spoken by a man or a woman)

हाँ, मुझे थोड़ी हिंदी आती है।

(haan, mujhe thordii hindii aatii hai)

Yes, I know a little Hindi.  (Yes, a little Hindi comes to me.) (Same phrase can be spoken by a man or a woman)

Spoken by a man:

नहीं, लेकिन मैं सीख रहा हूँ।

(nahiin, lekin mein siikh rahaa huun)

No, but I am learning Hindi.

Spoken by a woman:

नहीं, लेकिन मैं सीख रही हूँ।

(nahiin, lekin mein siikh rahii huun)

No, but I am learning Hindi.
