I go.  मैं जाता हूँ।  (or if you are a girl मैं जाती हूँ।) and “I drink.”  मैं पीता हूँ। (or if you are a girl, मैं पीती हूँ।) are simple sentences.  But how can you combine the two concepts together into a sentence like “I go to Starbucks for drinking coffee.”  (In English, it is more common to say, “I go to Starbuck to drink coffee.”  But the meaning of the two sentences are the same.)  In this episode, we look at this idea of “going for doing something.”

The “go to” construction is used in a host of sentences.  Take our coffee example a little further, you might want to say “Where do you go for drinking coffee?”  “When do you go for drinking coffee?”  “With whom do you go with for drinking coffee?”  “How do you go for drinking coffee?”  and of course you can see this pattern in a lot of other sentences.  “I go to the library for studying.”  “I go with my friends for seeing a film.”  You can even say, “I am going for eating.”  or “I went for singing.”

Start off by creating a sentence with जाना – to go.  Here are some to remind you of the different forms.

I go.  मैं जाता हूँ।  (or if you are a girl मैं जाती हूँ।)

I am going.  मैं जा रहा हूँ। (or if you are a girl मैं जा रही हूँ।)

I went.  मैं गया। (or if you are a girl मैं गयी।)

I used to go.  मैं जाता था। (मैं जाती थी।)

I will go.  मैं जाऊँगा। (मैं जाउँगी।)

I will be going. मैं जाता रहऊँगा। (मैं जाती रहऊँगी।)

Now add the “to drink”, “to eat”, “to study”, “to watch”, “to sing” part.  In Hindi, you use the postposition “for” with the dictionary form of the verb in the oblique form.  That is, change the ending आ sound to ए.

to drink – पीना 

but to say “for drinking”  पीने के लिये

to eat – खाना   

“for eating” खाने के लिये

to study – पढ़ना

“for studying” पढ़ने के लिये

to see– देखना

“for seeing” देखने के लिये

to sing – गाना

“for singing”  गाने के लिये

Now let us put this together.

In English we would say, “I go to drink coffee.”, but in Hindi think “I go for drinking coffee.”

मैं कॉफी पीने के लिये जाता हूँ।  (or if you are a girl  use जाती instead)

In English we say, “I am going to eat.", but in Hindi think “I am going for eating.”

मैं खाने के लिये जा रहा हूँ।  (or if you are a girl use रही instead)

In English we say, “I went to study.”  but in Hindi think “I went for studying.”

मैं पढ़ने के लिये गया।  (or if you are a girl use गयी instead)

In English, we say, “I used to go with my friends to see films.”  but in Hindi, think “I used to go with my friends for seeing films.”

मैं दोस्तों के साथ फि़ल्म देखने के लिये जाता था। (or if you are a girl use जाती थी)

Now do you see the pattern?

Try translating some of the sentences that we started out with:

Where do you go to drink coffee?

When do you go to drink coffee?

With whom do you go with to drink coffee?

How do you go to drink coffee?

I go to the library to study.

I go with my friends to watch a movie.
