हिन्दी प्रचार सभा एक आन्दोलन थी जो भारत के स्वतन्त्रता आन्दोलन के साथ ही आरम्भ हुई। एक स्वतन्त्र संस्था के रूप में सन १९१८ में इसकी स्थापना हुई। भारत में महात्मा गांधी के हिन्दी प्रचार आंदोलन के परिणामस्वरूप दक्षिण भारत हिन्दी प्रचार सभा की स्थापना मद्रास नगर के गोखले हॉल में डॉ.सी.पी. रामास्वामी अरयर की अध्यक्षता में एनी बेसेन्ट ने की थी।
गांधीजी जी आजीवन इसके सभापति रहे। उन्होंने देश की अखंडता और एकता के लिए हिन्दी के महत्व एवं उसके प्रचार-प्रसार पर बल दिया। कांग्रेस द्वारा स्वीकृत चौदह रचनात्मक कार्यक्रमों में राष्ट्रभाषा हिन्दी के व्यापक प्रचार-प्रसार कार्य का भी उल्लेख है। गांधीजी का विचार था कि दक्षिण भारत में हिन्दी के प्रचार का कार्य वहाँ के स्थानीय लोग ही करें। सन १९२० तक सभा का कार्यालय जार्ज टाउन, मद्रास (अब, चेन्नै) में था। कुछ वर्ष बाद यह मालापुर में आ गया। इसके बाद यह ट्रिप्लिकेन में आ गया और १९३६ तक वहीं बना रहा।
महात्मा गांधी के बाद देशरत्न डॉ.राजेन्द्र प्रसाद इस संस्था के अध्यक्ष बनाए गए, जो स्वयं हिन्दी के कट्टर उपासक थे। हिन्दी समाचार नाम की मासिक पत्रिका द्वारा सभा के उद्देश्य, प्रवृत्ति तथा अन्यान्य कार्यकलापों की विस्तृत सूचनाएँ प्रचारकों को मिलती रहती हैं। ‘दक्षिण भारत’ नामक त्रैमासिक साहित्यिक पत्रिका में दक्षिण भारतीय भाषाओं की रचनाओं के हिन्दी-अनुवाद और उच्चस्तर के मौलिक साहित्यिक लेख छपते हैं। हिन्दी अध्यापकों और प्रचारकों को तैयार करने के लिए सभा के शिक्षा विभाग के मार्गदर्शन में ‘हिन्दी प्रचार विद्यालय’ नामक प्रशिक्षण विद्यालय तथा प्रवीण विद्यालय संचालित होते हैं। प्रचार कार्य को सुसंगठित तथा शिक्षण को क्रमबद्ध और स्थायी बनाने के उद्धेश्य से सभा प्राथमिक, मध्यमा, राष्ट्रभाषा प्रवेशिका, विशारद, प्रवीण और हिन्दी प्रशिक्षण नामक परीक्षाओं का संचालन करती है। सभा की ओर से एक स्नातकोत्तर अध्ययन एवं अनुसंधान विभाग खोला गया है, जिसमें अध्ययनार्थ प्रोफेसरों की नियुक्ति होती है। पुस्तकों का प्रकाशन सभा के साहित्य विभाग की ओर से किया जाता है। हिन्दी के माध्यम से तमिल, तेलगू, कन्नड़, मलयालम चारों भाषाएँ सीखने के लिए उपयोगी पुस्तकों एवं कोश आदि के प्रकाशन का विधान है।

How Hindi provides employment /jobs to millions of people in India ?

A quick Response to your query, to best of my knowledge.
1. For All Hindi newspaper, without knowing Hindi, ( that to expertise in Politics, sports, movies, finance field,
may be with journalism qualification etc.) you can not get the job in India .
2. In all Hindi speaking states, major focus is on Hindi when letters/mails etc. are typed. Dictations are given in Hindi. Note sheets are
prepared in Hindi.( I have personally seen in Bihar, though worked for NGO, but work in collaboration with Govt. of Bihar with
various departments.)
3. All Hindi medium schools ( I am a student of Heavy Engineering Corporation, school of Hindi medium), without knowing Hindi
none of the teachers would have got employment. Believe me, till age 19 I could not develop English conversational skills as
only I concentrated in Hindi all through( local environment was such) . I studied in Hindi medium till graduation, naturally
most of teachers/professors taught the subjects ( Be it Economics, Economic Development, Money & Banking or International
Trade, Auditing, etc.) in Hindi, barring subjects like English/accountancy/cost accountancy.
4. There are millions of people in the world who want English or from some other languages related translations to be done in Hindi,
tatooing etc.
5. Marriage /house warming and other invitation cards (millions) printed in Hindi in most of the Hindi speaking states by general mass.
6. Hindi Books, note books are printed – Govt./Pvt. schools.
7. There are several Hindi interpreters required/available,/employed.
8. Bollywood movies in Hindi now famous all over world. Billions of Hindi audio/video cassettes,,CD etc. have been sold are being sold.
9. If you know Hindi very well, can work as guide when foreigners visit India ,especially if you know the details about the places, etc.
and can earn livelihood.
10. Hindi poem/poets /stories/writers/composers are/have earned only due to Hindi.
11. The great epics, Geeta, Mahabharata, Ramayan, Ramcharitmaanas etc. ( From Sanskrit, Avadhi etc. have been translated in Hindi
so that common man/needy persons can understand).
12. There were/are several great foreigners who have picked up Hindi so well, written dictionary, books etc. in Hindi. ( I recall

17. You name anything, health,Vastu,Astrology,Yoga, cookery, education, Bollywood, can check articles, web sites in

At the same time, if you know English, you will be able to explain the beauty of Hindi ( the 5000 years ancient
Devanagari language.)- The divine language which is a phonetic language.
May be ,you are hinting at that Hindi alone won’t do. Today’s employer wants his employee to know more languages,
education, skills(most important), work experience ( all can not have at the beginner of their career.).
Believe me, I worked for a US NGO in India( Bihar) first in 1976 , the foremost requirement was I must know Hindi
besides a requirement of a graduate.
But if a person is in Southern states of India, then Hindi may not be the
requirement..( Depending upon situation, individual/organization need, it can vary.)…….
To clarify further, the above essay was actually meant or the school students
who could use modify and write as per their need.

हिन्दी इस राष्ट्र की पुरातन संस्कृति का एक अटूट हिस्सा है। इतिहास साक्षी है कि इस राष्ट्र ने जब—जब किसी विपत्ति में स्वयं को घिरा हुआ पाया, हिन्दी भाषा ने चारों दिशाओं में स्थित विविध संस्कृति से युक्त राज्यों को एक सूत्र में पिरोकर राष्ट्र को संगठित किया एवं विपत्ति से राष्ट्र बाहर आ सका। चाहे अंग्रेजों के विरूद्ध 400 वर्षों तक चला स्वतंत्रता संग्राम हो, या उसके पूर्व मुगलों व यवनों के अत्याचारों से आक्रांत 1000 वर्षों का अविरल संघर्ष हो, राष्ट्रभाषा हिन्दी ने हर युग और काल में एक मंच प्रदान करने का अविस्मरणीय कार्य किया है।
किन्तु विगत कुछ वर्षों में इस भाषा को पल्लवित पुष्पित करने के मार्ग में जिस तरह की बाधायें आयी हैं, या कह सकते हैं कि बाधायें उत्पन्न की गई हैं, वह एक विचित्र स्थिति है। अब तक विदेशियों ने हिन्दी को पनपने से रोका, राष्ट्रकवियों को राष्ट्रीय भावना से ओतप्रोत कवितायें करने से रोका, तुलसी और मीरा के भक्तिपदों तक पर तरह—तरह के अंकुश लगाये गये, वह इस बात का द्योतक था कि भारतीय संस्कृति की प्राचीन उन्नत परम्परा को नष्ट करने के उद्देश्य से विदेशियों ने किया क्योंकि यही एक मार्ग था जिसके द्वारा वे इस राष्ट्र की एकता व अखण्डता को खंडित कर सकते थे। किन्तु यही कार्य जब स्वयं भारतीय करें, और वह भी स्वातंत्रयेत्तर भारत में, तो इसका कारण कुछ अस्पष्ट सा प्रतीत होता है। अंग्रेजी भाषा सार्वभौमिक रूप से सर्वमान्य एक अंतर्राष्ट्रीय भाषा है एवं उसका अपना एक कार्यक्षेत्र है, क्षेत्रीय भाषाओं की भी अपनी एक महत्ता है। किन्तु एक राष्ट्रभाषा के रूप में हिन्दी के अतिरिक्त हमारे पास और क्या विकल्प है? भारत के हर कोने में बोली और समझी जाने वाली यह एक व्यापक साहित्य से युक्त मीठी और सहज भाषा है, यह अलग बात है कि अपने स्वार्थ की अंधी परिभाषाओं में स्वयं को बद्ध कर कुछ लोग अलगाववादी मानसिकता के कारण हिन्दी का विरोध आदिकाल से करते आये हैं, किन्तु ऐसा करने वाले स्वयं जानते हैं कि यदि हिन्दी का विरोध है तो उनके प्रदेश से दूसरे प्रदेश में जाकर काम करने वाले लोगों का जीवन यापन असंभव हो जायेगा। अर्थात् भाषा की व्यापकता का लाभ तो वे लेना चाहते हैं किन्तु इसका प्रतिफल देने के बजाय वे हिन्दी के विरोध में ही स्वर मुखर करते हैं।
यह प्रश्न मात्र हिन्दी दिवस तक ही सीमित नहीं है बल्कि एक शाश्वत् सोच का विषय है कि हमें अपनी ही मातृभाषा से ऐसा दोयम दर्जे के व्यवहार की क्या आवश्यकता है? विश्व की हर भाषा का ज्ञान हो, इसमें किसी को कोई आपत्ति नहीं है, किन्तु अपनी ही मातृभाषा की सतत उपेक्षा कर हम संस्कृति को किस ओर ले जा रहे हैं, यह मंथन का विषय है। अंग्रेजी समेत किसी भी भाषा में हमारी निष्ठा हो किन्तु वह हिन्दी के प्रति उपेक्षा की कीमत पर कतई स्वीकार्य नहीं है। यह समय है जब हमें समझना होगा कि हमारा राष्ट्रध्वज मात्र कपड़े का टुकड़ा नहीं, वरन् सम्पूर्ण राष्ट्र की आत्मा का प्रतीक है। हमारा राष्ट्रगीत मात्र कुछ शब्दों का समंजन नहीं, अपितु प्रत्येक भारतवासी के हृदय की गूंज है। इसकी महत्ता हमारे स्वयं के अस्तित्व से कदापि कम नहीं। अंग्रेजों ने इस महत्ता को समझा था इसीलिये सबसे पहले उन्होंने अपने पैर जमाने के लिये भारतीय संस्कृति, स्थानीय बोलियों और राष्ट्रभाषा पर चोट की और लोगों को अलगाववादी मानसिकता की धारा में बहाने का प्रयास किया। किन्तु अब स्थितियां विपरीत हो चुकी हैं। अब अपने ही राष्ट्र के मूर्धन्य उत्तरदायी लोग हिन्दी की अस्मिता को सुरक्षित रखने के प्रति उदासीन हैं। यह एक गंभीर स्थिति है एवं इस उदासीनता के परिणाम भी प्रतिदिन राष्ट्र के विभिन्न हिस्सों से आते रहे हैं। अपनी मूल संस्कृति का सर्वनाश करके किसी भी विकास की कल्पना करना मृगमरीचिका के समान है। अत: यह प्रयास मात्र हिन्दी दिवस तक न होकर हर पल अनवरत चले, तभी हिन्दी दिवस की सार्थकता है। हिन्दी दिवस हिन्दी के लिये कुछ करने हेतु प्रारम्भ करने का दिन नहीं है, वरन् वर्ष भर हिन्दी के उन्नयन के लिये किये गये प्रयासों की समीक्षा का दिन है। आईये, हम भी अपने वर्ष के प्रयासों की समीक्षा करें एवं यदि हमारा प्रयास शून्य रहा है, तो आज ही आत्मविश्लेषण करें कि अपनी संस्कृति व भाषा के महत्व को न समझकर हमने क्या खोया है? आप सबको हिन्दी दिवस की हार्दिक शुभकामनायें।

Greetings. Undoubtedly, English has contributed to a great extent in the progress/publicity/acceptability of Hindi with more and more people in the world .I have several Indians (in abroad/India) & foreigners who currently learn Hindi from me on line. Without transliteration or translation of Devanagaree/Hindi to English, tuition job would have been certainly impossible. All Hindi learners ultimately want to know more about Indian culture, relations, tourist places, Hinduism, news, food, Yoga, Bollywood movies, etc., in Hindi language so that when they visit India, they are able to conversely in Hindi with locals and understand the subject well. This will also enable the new Hindi learner to converse with native Hindi speakers freely with the assistance of English language whenever required to clarify a content/matter/topic. In fact English has been the only and the best medium to learn Hindi as well as several other languages from various parts of the world. Please wake up to the fact that, Hindi is just getting downgraded to the status of a regional language of the north indian states(BIMARU,they call it right?..)Just like your own tamil is.
India is soon poised to become or aleady become the largest English speaking nation in the whole of world..Thats the trend!

Namaskaaram. Greetings from Chennai. Yes, I am a Tamilian. I was brought up in Bihar/Ranchi for 35 years. You reserve the right to give your opinion. For your information, half of my online Hindi learning students are South Indians ( from Chennai,Gurgaon, USA & Singapore and several are Tamilians.) Believe me currently ,I have Hindi learning students who belong to France,Denmark,Canada,USA. The day is not far off when Hindi is going to be a language spoken by maximum people in the world. This is my personal opinion.

I fully agree with you that learning a language is an individual choice. Some time need forces/compels you to learn a language.
Why people are learning Hindi.
a) Want to have business in India. Sixty percent of population still remains in the villages ( major language spoken in India
still remains Hindi.)
b) A person going from South India to North India on official business/ on transfer from Govt./prv.jobs , are really finding
it extremely difficult to manage with English, hence are compelled to learn Hindi.
(quoting a fact: Two of the family members know Tamil and English very well, have started learning Hindi on line
effective last month)
c) Cross culture/ state marriage (love etc.) or cross country US -India, China -India, UK- India – marriages. Since the bride or bridegroom from abroad with to converse with Indian in-laws, relatives, friends, end up learning Hindi

d) There are several foreigners who seriously want to understand the meaning of Bollywood songs, some poems etc. hence have been devoting time in learning Devanagari ( divine language ) which is 5000 years old.
e) India has several tourist places in north, east, central and western parts of India, where the foreigners once
visit, they become frequent visitors and are learning Hindi seriously. ( I have a student from Denmark who has already
visited India 19 times , he speaks Hindi well, still wants to hone his skills further and is learning Hindi from me
on line.) There are several students, some even come on exchange programme. Several foreigners work for NGOs in India
and are learning Hindi or are trying to improve their skills further so that they can understand the beneficiaries
actual need and provide them the best possible assistance.
PS: Presently I have a student in Dubai who is from Tamilnadu, he is learning Hindi on line as his all co workers/staff are mainly from Bihar and UP and when they speak Hindi, he is unable to converse.
Mr. Nathan, an American who is owner of this site ( http://www.Ispeakhindi.com) had long back informed me that there are more than 7000 registered members. I am sure more than 50% are foreigners, keen to enhance their Hindi knowledge and skills.
