मुहावरे –Muhavarein (idioms)

परिभाषा (Paribhaasha) = definition: वाक्यांश जो विशेष अर्थ दर्शाता है ,मुहावरा  कहलाता है।

(Vaakyaash jo vishesh arth darshaata hai, muhavara kahlaata hai.)

The phrase which reflects special meaning, is called idioms.

मुहावरा एक  पूर्ण वाक्य नहीं होता है, इसलिए ,इसका स्वतंत्र रूप से प्रयोग नहीं किया जा सकता है।

(Muhavra ek purn vaakya naihin hota hai , isliye, iska swatantra roop se prayog nahin kiya jaa sakta hai.)

The phrase is not a complete sentence, hence , it can not be used independently.

मुहावरे का उपयोग और सही ढंग से अर्थ समझना बहुत मुश्किल है|

(Muhavare ka upyog aur sahee dhang se arth samajhna bahut mushkil hai.)

It is very difficult to use the idioms and understand the meaning correctly.

इसे अभ्यास से ही सीखा जा सकता है।

(Isey abhyaas se seekha jaa sakta hai.)

It can be learned from practice.

उदाहरण = Udaaharan (Example):

1. ईद का चाँद होना – (काफी  दिनों बाद दिखाई देना) – राकेश , आप तो कभी दिखाई ही नहीं देते हैं,ऐसा लगता है कि आप ईद के चाँद हो गए हैं।

(Id ka chaand hona.-(kafee dinon baad dikhai dena)- Rakesh, aap to kabhee dikhai hee nahin dete hain, aisa lagta hai kei aap id ke chaand ho gaye hain.)

To become, moon of Id.(Muslim festival) (appear only after a long time). Rakesh, You are never seen, it appears that you have become moon of Id.

Vocabulary: चाँद – Chaand = moon

2. अपना उल्लू सीधा करना – (मतलब निकालना) – कई लोग ऐसे हैं जो अपना उल्लू सीधा करने के लिए लोगों को गुमराह करते हैं।

(Apna ullu seedha karna-(matlab nikaalna)- Kai loag aise hain jo apna ullu seedha karney ke liye logono ko gumraah kartey hain.)

Straighten own owl-(self-interest)- There are several people who mislead people in self interest,

Vocabulary: स्वार्थी (swarthee) = selfish in nutshell (संक्षेप) – sankshep

गुमराह (gumraah) – mislead

3. आँखे खुलना – (सचेत होना) – ठोकर खाने के बाद ही बहुत से लोगों की आँखे खुलती हैं।

(Aankhein khulana(Sachet hona)- Thokar khaney ke baad bahut se logon ke aankey khulti hain.)

Opening of eyes-(to become conscious , after stumbling only , many people’s eye open.)

Vocabulary: सचेत होना (sachet hona)- to become conscious ठोकर (Thokar)-stumble

4. ईंट का जबाब पत्थर से देना – (बदला लेना) – यह आवश्यक है कि दुश्मनों के ईंट का जवाब पत्थर से दिया जाय।

(eent ka jawaab pathar se dena – (badla lena) – Yah aavashyak hai kei dushmon ke eent ka jawab pathar se diya jay.)

To answer with stone to brick – (to take revenge) – It is imperative that enemies are responded with stone to brick.

Vocabulary: बदला (Badla)- revenge दुश्मनों (Dushmano) -enemies

ईंट (eent)- brick पत्थर (patthar)-stone

5.आसमान से बातें करना – (बहुत ऊँचा होना) – न्यू -यार्क  की इमारतें आसमान से बातें करती हैं।

(Aasmaan se baatein karna –(Bahut ooncha hona)- New- york kee imaaratein aasmaan se baatein kartee hain.)

The buildings of New York talk to the sky.

Vocabulary: It means skyscraper = गगनचुंबी इमारत (Gaganchumbee imaarat).

भवन (Bhawan) – Building. आसमान –aasmaan means –sky or आकाश (aakaash)or नभ (nabh)or गगन (gagan)

6.अपने पैरों पर खड़ा होना – (स्वावलंबी  होना) – हर व्यक्ति  को अपने पैरों पर  खडा होना चाहिए।

(Apney pairon par khada hona – (Swavlambi hona)- Har vyakti ko apney pairon par khada hona chahiye.)

To stand on own feet- ( to be Self-supporting or self-reliant or self-sufficient)- Every person should stand on own feet.

Vocabulary: आत्म निर्भर (aatm-nirbhar(-self-dependent). अपने पैरों (apney pairon)-own feet

7.अपने मुँह मियाँ मिट्ठू बनना – (स्वयं अपनी प्रशंसा करना ) – आत्म प्रशंसा कोई सिफारिश नहीं है|(Aaatm prashansa koyee sifarish nahin hai.)

(Apney munh miya mitthu banana-(swayam apnee prashansa karna))

To do self-praise about oneself ( praise self) Self-praise is no recommendation.

Vocabulary: प्रशंसा (prashansa )=praise or तारीफ(praise)  स्तुति (stuti) or बड़ाई(badai)

8. उड़ती चिड़िया पहचानना – (रहस्य की बात दूर से जान लेना) – अनुभवी व्यक्ति  को  उड़ती चिड़िया पहचानने में देर नहीं लगती।

(Udtee chidiya pahchanana-(Rahasya kee baat duur se jaan lena)- Anubhavee vyakti ko udti chidiya pahchananey mein deyr nahin lagatee.)

To idenfity the flying bird-( To know the matter of mystery from a distance) The experienced person does not take long time to recognize/identify the secret.

Vocabulary: पहचानना(Pahchanana)= idenfity रहस्य=(Rahasy)- secret/mystery

9. अक्ल का चरने जाना – (समझ का अभाव होना) – इतना भी समझ नहीं सके ,क्या अक्ल चरने गयी  है?

(Akl ka charney jaana-(samjah ka abhaav hona)- Itna bhee samajh nahin sakey, kya akl charney gayee hai?)

( sense gone to graze) -( lack of understanding). Could not understand even this, whether the sense has gone to graze.

Vocabulary: अक्ल = Akl- sense चरने(Charney)-graze

10.ईंट से ईंट बजाना – (पूरी तरह से नष्ट करना) – रवि ने शत्रु के घर की ईंट से ईंट बजा दी  । eent se eent bajaana –(Pooree tarah se nasht karna) Ravi, ney shatru ke ghar kee eent se eent baha dee. To play with brick to brick(To destroy completely )- Ravi destroyed the house of the enemy completely.

Vocabulary :शत्रु(shatru)-enemy

11. अपने अक्ल का दुश्मन – (मूर्ख) – आजकल तुम अक्ल के दुश्मन क्यों  हो गए हो ? Akl ke dushman-(moorkh)-

(Aaajkal tum akl ke dushman kyon ho gaye ho?)

Enemy to own sense (stupid or fool) . Why have you become enemy to your sense these days?

VOCABULARY: अक्ल (AKL): SENSE मूर्ख (MOORKH)-IDIOT

12.आँख का तारा – (बहुत प्यारा) -  बच्चे अपने माँ -बाप की आँखों का तारा होते हैं।

(Aaank ka taara-(bahut pyara)-bacchey apney maan-baap kee aankon kaa taaraa hotey hain.)

Star of the eye( very cute). The children are star of their parents. I think in English :you say “apple of the eyes”

VOCABULARY: आँख (Aankh)-Eye तारा (tara)-star प्यारा (pyaara)-cute,lovely.

13. उलटी गंगा बहाना – (अनहोनी हो जाना) – मीता अगर किसी के साथ  प्रेम से बात करती है, तो उलटी गंगा बह जायेगी।

(Ulatee ganga bahaana-(anhonee ho jaana)-Meeta kisee ke saath prem se baat karee hai, to ulati ganga bah jaayegee.)

To make the ganges flow reverse-(untowards happening)- Meeta If talks to someone with love, the ganges will flow reverse.

VOCABULARY: उलटी : Ultee – reverse/opposite अनहोनी (Anhonee)- untoward happening

14. आँखे दिखाना – (बहुत क्रोध करना) – गायत्री मुझे आँख दिखा रही थी।

(Andhkein dikhaana-(Bahut kroadh karna)- Gayatree mujhein aankh dikhaa rahee thee.)

To show eyes (To get very angry)- Gayathri was showing me eye.

VOCABULARY: क्रोध (krodh)-anger or Gussa or naaraaj or rusht

15. उन्नीस बीस का अंतर होना – (बहुत कम अंतर होना) – सीता और गीता की पहचान कर पाना बहुत मुश्किल है ,क्योंकि दोनों में उन्नीस बीस का अंतर है ।

(Unnees bees ka antar hona- ( bahut kam antar hona)- Seeta aur Geeta kee pahchaan kar paana bahut mushkil hai, kyonki donon mein unnees bees ka antar hai.)

Difference of Nineteen twenty – (to be very little difference) –It is very difficult to identify Seeta and Geeta because of the difference of nineteen twenty between the two.

VOCABULARY: अंतर = फर्क = difference मुश्किल= कठिन- difficult
