Namaste,
On this day we DO NOT worship Holika AND she is not a goddess.
Holika was the sister of King Hiranyakashyapu who tried to convert his son from becoming a Vaishnav to worshipping him instead.
Its probably the first time in history we have heard of someone forcing conversion upon others.
We therefore celebrate the ‘Faith’ Prahlad had in his own Dharma and Vishnu. It inspires us to follow the same.
There are other related meanings that later came to be associated with Holi like spring and throwing colours etc, but in Gujarat it is not the worship of Holika.
Holika is considered ‘evil’ who tried to burn Prahlad. She may have been good at one time but the fact remains she sided with Adharma and had to die.
This is triumph of good over evil.
Dharma over Adharma.
Have faith in your God whatever your the pressures you may face from others.
Those who Force us against our will.
Our will must therefore be strong
So let today that strength be inspired.
The Bonfire is also a representation of pooja or yajna. The whole community comes together to perform pooja to AgniDev. May evil inside us burn.
So the coconut is thrown in the fire. The outside is burnt but the inside is pure when split open.
