Phrase of the Day

क्या हाल है? (kyā hāl hai? ) – How are you?  (literally “What is your condition?”)

Grammar Tip of the Day

Habitual present and past tenses.  What are the habitual tenses?  Theseare things that you do but are not done at a particular time.

Examples of the habitual tense

“I speak Hindi.”  मैं हिंदी बोलता हूँ। (maĩ hin-dī bōl-tā hūn)

“I used to speak Hindi.”  मैं हिंदी बोलता था। (maĩ hin-dī bōl-tā thā.)

Here is the general pattern that we will be using:

<Subject>  <direct object> <Verb> <Helping Verb>

You need to know two things about the subject.  Is the subject masculine or feminine?  Is the subject singular or plural?

मैं (maĩ) can be masculine or feminine depending on who is saying it.   But it is always singular.

राम ने कहा मैं उर्दू बोलता हूँ। (rāma nē ka-hā maĩ urdū bōlatā hū̃. Ram said I speak Urdu.

मीना ने कहा मैं हिंदी बोलती हूँ।  (mī-nā nē ka-hā maĩ hin-dī bōl-tī hūn) Meena said I speak Hindi.

आप (āp) and तुम (tum) both mean “you”.  Both can be masculine or feminine depending on who you are talking to. आप (āp) and तुम (tum) मोल can refer to one or more people, but grammatically they are always treated as plural.  If you which to be specific about referring to more than one person, you can add लोग (log) after it.  (e.g. आप लोग (āp log) and तुम लोग (tum log))

मीना ने राम से कहा क्या आप हिंदी बोलते हैं? (mī-nā nē rām sē ka-hā kyā āp hin-dī bōl-tē haĩ?) Meena said to Ram do you speak Hindi?

राम ने मीना से कहा क्या आप उर्दू बोलती हैं? (rām nē mī-nā sē ka-hā kyā āp ur-dū bōl-tī haĩ?) Ram said to Meena do you speak Urdu?

वह (vah) can be used as “he” or “she”.  The gender depends on who you are referring to, but it is always singular.

The girl was a vegetarian.  लड़की शाकाहारी थी। (laṛ-kī śā-kā-hā-rī thī.)

She did not eat fish.  वह मछली नहीं खाती थी। (vah mach-lī na-hīn khā-tī thī.)

But now she is a meat-eater.  लेकिन अभी वह माँसाहारी है। (lē-kin a-bhī vah mān-sā-hā-rī hai.)

And she eats chicken.  और वह मुरगी खाती है। (aur va-ha mur-gī khā-tī hai.)

वे (vē) means “they”.  It can be masculine or feminine depending on the group that you are referring to, but it is always plural.  Let’s see some examples:

The girls used to sing a lot.  लड़कियाँ बहुत गाती थीं। (laṛ-ki-yān ba-hut gā-tī thīn.)

But now they do not sing.  लेकिन अभी वे नहीं गाती हैं। (lē-kin a-bhī vē nahīn gā-tī haĩ.)

The boys did not play cricket.  लड़के क्रिकेट नहीं खेलते थे। (laṛ-kē kri-kē-ṭa na-hīn khēl-tē thē.)

But now they play.   लेकिन अभी वे खेलते हैं। (lē-kin a-bhī vē khēl-tē haĩ.)

What do you need to know about the habitual tense?

1)  Find a verb, any verb (e.g. बोलना (bōl-nā) to speak, लिखना (likh-nā) to write, खाना (khā-nā) to eat)

2) drop off the “ना” (nā) ending from the verb  (e.g. बोल (bōl), लिख (likh), खा (khā))

3) Determine if the subject is masculine or feminine (if it is unknown, go with masculine.)  And determine if the subject is singular or plural.  Add the appropriate ending to the verb:

  • masculine and singular then use ता (tā)  (e.g. बोलता (bōl-tā), लिखता (likh-tā), खाता (khā-tā))
  • masculine and plural use ते (tē) (e.g. बोलते (bōl-tē), लिखते (likh-tē), खाते (khā-tē))
  • feminine (for both singular and plural) use ती  (e.g. बोलती (bōl-tī), लिखती (likh-tī), खाती (khā-tī))

4) Determine the helping verb.

  • present
    • मैं (maĩ) is the subject then use हूँ (hūn) as the helping
    • तुम (tum) is the subject then use हो (hō)
    • For singular subjects use है (hai)
    • For plural subjects use हैं (haĩ)
  • past
    • masculine singular subjects use था (thā)
    • masculine plural subjects use थे (thē)
    • feminine singular subjects use थी (thī)
    • feminine plural subjects use थीं (thīn)

Thoughts on Language Learning

Here is an interesting quote from the Katherine Russell Rich’s book Dreaming in Hindi (p.62) :

“You have to be able to tolerate ambiguity if you want to learn a language,” my teacher Gabriela had said.

BBC Hindi Article

Let’s go over the story line by line

Title: लड़ाकू विमान के सौदे में अमरीका को झटका

In the deal of the fighter jets America was shaken

भारत ने 126 लड़ाकू विमान ख़रीदने के लिए अमरीका और रूस की कंपनियों की दावेदारी को ख़ारिज करते हुए यूरोप की कंपनियों को शॉर्टलिस्ट किया है.

India while denying the claim of buying 126 fighter jets from American and Russian companies has shortlisted European Companies.

समाचार एजेंसियों के मुताबिक़ 10 अरब डॉलर से भी ज़्यादा के इस सौदे के लिए यूरोप की कंपनी डेसो और यूरोफ़ाइटर को चुना गया है.

According to new agencies for this deal of more than 10 billion dollars, they have selected the European companies Deso and EuroFighter.

अमरीकी कंपनियों को ठेका ना देने के फ़ैसले की ख़बर उस दिन सामने आई है, जिस दिन भारत में अमरीकी राजदूत टिमोथी रोमर ने पारिवारिक कारणों से अपने पद से इस्तीफ़ा देने की घोषणा की.

That day the news had come of not giving the tender to American companies, that day the American ambassador in India, Timothy Romer, announced his resignation for family reasons.

इस ठेके के लिए ख़ुद अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति बराक ओबामा ने भी पूरी कोशिश की थी.

For this contract the American president Barak Obama himself tried completely.
