An idiom is a combination of words that has a meaning that is different from the meanings of the individual words themselves. It can have a literal meaning in one situation and a different idiomatic meaning in another situation. It is a phrase which does not always follow the normal rules of meaning and grammar.

(Devanagari)/(transliteration)/Translation
चकमा देना (chakma dena)- to dodge.
वह चकमा (dodge) देने में होशियार (clever/smart ) है |
(Vah chakma deney mein hoshiyaar hai.)
He is clever (smart ) to dodge.
उल्टी गंगा बहना (ulti ganga behna)- reverse flow of the Ganges- unusual
मुझे आज समझ में नहीं आया कि वह मेरी प्रशंसा (praise) क्यों कर रहा था ?
(Mujhe aaj samajh mein nahi aaya kie vah mere prashansa kyon kar raha tha?)
I could not understand today why was he praising me.

छ्क्के छुड़ाना (chakke chhudana)- defeating badly.
शिवाजी ने मुगलों के छक्के छुडा दिए i
(Shivaji ney muglon ke chakkey chuda diye.
(Shivaji defeated Mughals badly).

मुँह में पानी आना (munh mein pani aana) – temptation of food
जलेबी देखकर मेरे मुंह में पानी आ गया|
(Jalebee dekhkar merey munh mien paanee aa gaya.)
Seeing Jalebi (a sweet dish) my mouth started watering.
आँखो का तारा (Aankhein ka tara)- dear
वह माँ की आँखों का तारा है|
(Vah maa kee aankon ka taara hai.)
He is mother’s blue eyed son.
आँखें चुराना (Aankhein Churaana) – to avoid
अपनी गलती (fault) जानने के बाद , वह मुझ से आंखें चुरा रहा है|
(Apnee galtee jaanaey ke baad, vah mujhse aankhey chura raha hai. )
After knowing his fault, he is trying to get away from my sight.
दांतों तले उंगली दबाना | (danto taley ungaleei dabaana)_Pressed fingers under teeth (was surprised).
अस्सी वर्ष के वृद्ध व्यक्ति को दौडते देखकर , मैने दांतों(teeth) तले उंगली(fingers) दबा(press) ली|
(Assee varsh ke vriddh vyakti ko daudtey dekhkar mainey daanto tale oonglee daba lee.)
Seeing the 80 years old person running, I pressed my fingers under the teeth.(It means I was surprised.)
मुँह मीठा करना (Munh meetha karna)
जब उसके लड़के को नौकरी(job) मिली(got) तब उसने सभी पड़ोसियों का मुंह मीठा (sweet) कराया |
(Jab uskay ladkey ko naukree milee tab usnay sabhee padosiyon ka munh meetha karaaya .)
When his son got the job, he distributed the sweets to all neighbours.
चेहरा उतरना | (Chehara utarna)- face down
वाहन की दुर्घटना होने पर राम का चेहरा उतर गया|
(Vaahan kee durghatna honay par Ram ka chehara ootar gaya.)
After accident of the vehicle Ram was disappointed.
बात पक्की होना (baat pakkee hona)- agreed upon
कल हम घुमने चलेंगे, तो बात पक्की |
(Kal ham ghoomay challenge, to baat pakkee.)
Tomorrow we shall roam (move) around so that’s agreed upon.
बाल-बाल बचना (bal bal bachna) – Narrow escape.
कल मैं रेलगाडी से गिरते बाल बाल बचा|
(Kal main railwgaadee se hirtey bal bal bacha..)
I narrowly escaped from falling from the train,yesterday.

अक्ल का दुश्मन (akal ka dushman)- Enemy to sense
वह वास्तव ( fact ) में अक्ल का दुश्मन ( enemy ) है|
(Vah vaastav mein akl ka dushman hai.)
He is, infact, brainless i.e. stupid/idiot.
जान पर खेलना (jaan par khelna)-without fear of own life.
सैनिक अपने जान(life)पर खेलकर देश की सेवा करते हैं |
(Sainik apnay jaan par khelkar desh kee seva kartey hain. )
The soldiers serve the country without the fear of own life.
पेट में चूहे कूदना (pet mein chuhe kudna)- feeling very hungry.
मेरे पेट में चूहे (mice) कूद (jump) रहे है!( The mice are jumping in my stomach.)
( Merey pet mein chuhe kood rahe hain.)
I am feeling very hungry!
पहाड़ (mountain) टूट (break) पड़ना (pahad toot padna)- Getting into big trouble
जब मेरे ससुर (father-in-law) का अचानक (suddenly) देहांत हो गया, मेरी पत्नी को लगा जेसे कि उसपर पहाड़ टूट पड़ा हो|
(Jab mere sasur ka achanak dehant ho gaya, mere patnee ko laga jaise kie uspar pahaad toot pada ho.
When my father-in-law suddenly died, my wife thought as if, she got into a big trouble.
कमर (waist) टूटना (fracture) ( kamar tootna – It means. to get disappointed
नौकरी (job) खोजते खोजते (search) मेरी कमर टूट गयी |
(Naukree khojtey khojtey maree kamar toot gayee .)
( I got frustrated searching Jobs, )
