कहावतें (Kahavatein)-Proverbs

चोर ( thief) की दाढी ( beard) में तिनका ( grass) |

(Chor kee daadhee mein tinka).

Grass in the beard of thief.

Actual meaning: You have done something wrong but trying to hide.

 

खट्टे (sour)  अंगूर कौन खाए|

(Khattey angoor kaun khaaye.)

Who will eat sour grapes.

Actual meaning: You could not attain something and  say that is bad and do not want  other’s to get  the same.

 

दाल   (pulse) में  काला  -

Daal mein kaala)

Black in pulse.

Real meaning: Something fishy.

 

दूर के ढोल ( drum) सुहावने लगते हैं |

(Door key dhol suhavney lagety hain.)

The drums sounds better at a distance.

The actual meaning is: we tend to like the ones ,we don’t have.

 

आसमान से  गिरा (fell)  खजूर (dates)के   पेड़  में  अटका (got stuck)  |

(Aasmaan se gira, khajoor ke pad mein ataka.)

Fell from the sky, got stuck in a  dates  tree.

Actual meaning is: Falling from frying pan into fire.

 

सूत (thread) ना कपास (cotton), जुलाहों (weavers)  में लाठा-लाठी (sticks)

(Soot na kapaas, julaahon mein laatha-laathee)

There is neither thread nor cotton, yet weavers are fighting.

The actual  meaning is  that you are making plans without acquiring the required resources.

 

जले (burn) पर नमक (salt) छिड़कना  (sprinkle)|

(Jaley par namak chhidakna )
To sprinkle salt on one’s burn.

Actual meaning is: To prick on ones problems and make them feel worse or to add insult to injury.

 

खुदा  ( God) मेहरबान  तो  गधा  पहलवान ( wrestler) |

(Khuda meherban tho gadha pehelwan)
(If god blesses ,a donkey  can become a wrestler.)
With grace of god even the most useless person can become great.

 

सर सलामत( intact) , तो पगडी ( turban) हज़ार|

( Sar Salamat, to Pagdi hazaar)
If your head is intact, you can have a thousand turbans.

It means , in troubled times, save your head first, your possessions
should not be your priority. You can buy worldly materials anytime later.

 

अति परिचय   अवमानना (contempt) उत्पन्न  करता  है  |  या अत्यधिक  परिचय (introduction)

अनादर (disrespect) का    कारण (reason) बनता है|

(Atiparichay avmaanana utpann karta hai. ) or (Atyadhik parichay anaadar

ka kaaran banata hai.  )

Familiarity breeds contempt  or  Excessive familiarity causes disrespect.

 

अक्ल (brain)  बड़ी (great) या  भैंस (buffalo)|

(Akl badee  ya  bhains).

Actual Meaning: Fighting for hypothetical failure of things  which you don’t have.

 

बंदर (monkey) क्या जाने अदरक (ginger) का स्वाद (taste) ?

(Bandar kya jaanay adrakh ka swaad?

What does monkey know the taste of  the ginger? 

It means someone who can’t understand can’t appreciate.

It means laying pearls before swine. सूअर के आगे मोती बिछाना  |

(Suar ke aagey motee bichhaana)

 

बन्दर कभी गुलाटी ( acrobats) मारना  नहीं भूलता |

(Bandar kabhee gulaatee maarna nahin bhulta.)

Monkey never  forgets it’s mischievousness(doing acrobats).

It means old habits die hard. पुरानी  (old)आदत (habit) नहीं बदलती (changes)

 

सौ ( hundred)  चूहे (mice) खाकर बिल्ली (cat) हज को चली  |

(Sau billee khaaakar billee haz ko chalee)

After feasting on hundreds of mice the cat embarks on a pilgrimage (Haz-

Refers to Muslim pilgrimage) .   A person who wants to veil his bad acts.

It means all that glitters is not Gold

 

जान (life)है तो जहान (world) है |

(Jaan hai to Jahan Hai.)
If there is  life, then there is  the world.
it means, only if you are alive, things matter.

 

नाक  का  बाल  होना|

(Naak ka baal hona.)

Very close to heart.

 

भैंस ( buffalo) के आगे बीन (flute) बजाना|

(Bhains kay aagay been bajaana)

Playing flute before buffalo.

It means, tailor your speech to your audience.

 

जितनी लम्बी (length) चादर(bedsheet) उतना ही पाँव (leg) पसारो ( stretch) |

(Jitnee lambee chaadar utna hee paanv pasaaro.)

Stretch your leg according to the length of the bed sheet.

It means, expenditure should be within income or live within your means. .

 

मन (heart) चंगा (good) तो  कठौती (water bowl) में गंगा  ( the Ganges) या  आप भला (noble)  तो जग (world)  भला ( noble) |

(Man changa to kathautee meing ganga  or Aaap bhala to jag bhala)

If you are noble ,you will find world noble.  - Ganges refer to the Indian holy river

 

लातों  ( kicks ) के  भूत  ( ghost) बातों  ( talking ) से  नहीं  मानते |

(Laaton ke bhoot baton se nahin maantey.)

There are people who only understand the language of beating /kicks and not of talking

 

भेड़ (sheep) के खाल में  भेड़िया (wolf)|

(Bhend ke khaal mein bhediya)

Wolf in sheep’s skin.  It means  a person who looks totally different from his original cunning personality.

 

चार दिन की चांदनी (moonlight) फिर अंधेरी (dark) रात|

(Chaar din ki chaandanee phir andheri raat)

Dark nights will return after these few moonlit nights.  The meaning is :  While rejoicing during good times one should not forget that more trying times will also return. This is a natural cycle of events.

 

जो  गरजते (thunder)  हैं  वो   बरसते (rain)  नहीं  है|

(Jo garajte hain woh barastey nahin hain.)
Clouds that thunder seldom rain.
It means: Barking dogs seldom bite. Those who make the most threats seldom do anything.

 

गेंहू (wheat)  के साथ घुन (mite) भी चक्की ( mill)  में साथ पीसता है |

(Genhu ke saath ghun bhee peesta hai.)

Mite (Bugs/insects) infested with  the wheat gets powdered   in the mill/grinder .
It means watch the company you keep.

 

कुत्ते के पूँछ (tail) में घी डालने से भी कभी  सीधी (straight) नहीं होगी|

(Kuttey key puunch mein ghee daalnay se bhee  kabhee seedhee nahin hogee.)

You can’t  ever  straighten dog’s tail  by applying  clarified butter.
It means that  the  hard core people  will never  change their attitude.
