समास (Samaas) ;
जब दो या दो से अधिक पद बीच की विभक्ति को छोड़कर मिलते है,तो पदों के इस मेल को समास कहते है|
(Jab do ya do se adhik pad kee vibhakti ko chhodkar milatey hain, to padon ke is mail ko samaas kahtey hain.)
When two or more disyllables conjoin/meet leaving the separation, the meeting of these disyllables
is called the compound
Examples:
रसोई के लिए घर - रसोईघर ( Rasoyeeghar) = kitchen
राजा का पुत्र -राजपुत्र ( Raajputr) = King's son
मति के अनुसार - यथामति (Ythamati )= As per intelligence/brain जीवन-भर -आजीवन ( Aaajeevan) = lifelong
शक्ति के अनुसार -यथाशक्ति (Yathashakti) = As per power
शक के बिना - बेशक (Beshak)= without doubt
संदेह के बिना - निस्संदेह (Nihsandeh ) = without doubt
तुलसी द्वारा कृत (रचित) - तुलसीदासकृत (Tulsidaskrut ) =composed by Tulsidas
गंगा का जल - गंगाजल (Gangajal )= The Gange's water
न सभ्य - असभ्य (Asabhy) = who is not civilized
न अंत - अनंत ( Anant ) = endless/infinite
न संभव - असंभव ( Asambhav) = Impossible
चंद्र जैसा मुख=- ( चंद्रमुख (Chandramukh) = face like moon
कमल के समान नयन ( Kamal ek samaan nayan ) कमलनयन (kamalnayan)= lotus eye नीला कमल (((=-Neela kamal ) नीलकमल =( ( neelkamal - Blue lotus पीला अंबर (वस्त्र) ( Peelaa Ambar)-vastr पीतांबर (peetaambar) = Yellow cloth नौ रात्रियों का समूह = Nine nights altogether= नवरात्र ( navraatr)= Nine nights सौ अब्दो (सालों) का समूह ( Group of 100 years) शताब्दी= 100 years खरा और खोटा ( Khara aur khota ) खरा-खोटा - True-false ऊँच और नीच ( Oonch- neech) ऊँच-नीच - ups- down
दश है आनन (मुख) अर्थात् ( arhtaat i.e. meaning) रावण दशानन ten mouth/faces i.e Raavan) नीला है कंठ अर्थात् शिव (Shiva) नीलकंठ (epithet of siva) -juggulam/gizzard लंबा है उदर (पेट) अर्थात् गणेशजी लंबोदर ( Big stomach) श्वेत है जिसके अंबर (वस्त्र) अर्थात् सरस्वती ( Goddess Saraswati) श्वेतांबर - white dress
