कहावतें (Kahavatein)
झाड़ ( bush) पर के दो पक्षियों ( birds) से हाथ आया एक पक्षी कीमती ( worth) होता है। ( Jhaad par key do pakshiyon se haath aaya ek pakshee keematee hotaa hai.)
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
एक साहूकार ( sahookaar) or बैंकर वो होता है जो कि साधारण धूप (sunshine) रहने के वक्त आपको छाता (umbrella) उधार (lends) देता है और पानी बरसते वक्त ( time) वापस माँग लेता है ।
( Ek sahookar or bankar vo hotaa hai jo ki saadhaaran dhoop rahney ke vakt aapko chhaata udhaar deta hai aur paanee varasatey vakt
waapas maang leta hai.) A banker is someone who lends you an umbrella when the sun is shining, and who asks to return it back when it starts to rain.
नाम बढ़ावे (increases) दाम (price) | ( Naam badhaavey daam) Name increases the price. It means
किसी चीज का नाम हो जाने से उसकी कीमत (value) बढ़ जाती है। ( Kisee cheez ka naam ho jaaney se uskee keemat badh jaatee hai.)
The name of something enhances it’s value .
पागलों के क्या् सींग ( horns) होते हैं ? ( Paagalon key kya seeng hotey hain? ) Do the crazy have horns?. It means
पागल ( crazy) भी साधारण मनुष्य होता है। ( Paagal bhee saadhaaran manushy hota hai. ) Crazy is also ordinary person.
नक्कारखाने में तूती ( shots) की आवाज ( sound) |( nakkarkhaaney mein tootee kee aavaaz.) Sound of shots in deaf ears. It means:
महत्व न मिलना। ( mahatv na milnaa. ) Not getting the importance.
नीचे से जड़ ( root) काटना,ऊपर से पानी देना | ( Neechey se jad kaatnaa, oopar se paanee denga. ) – To cut from down.i.e roots, watering from top. It means.
ऊपर से मित्र, भीतर से शत्रु ( enemy) । ( Upar se mitr, bheetar se shatru.) – Friend outwardly, enemy from within.
नौ नकद, न तेरह उधार ( borrow) | ( Nau nakad, na terah udhaar.) Nine in cash, not thirteen after borrowing. It means
नकद ( cash) का काम उधार के काम से अच्छा। ( nakad ka kaam udhaar ke kaam se achha.) Working for cash is better than working after
borrowing.
पूत ( son) के पाँव ( feet) पालने ( cradle) में पहचाने जाते हैं | ( Poor key paanv paalney mein pahchaaney jaatey hain.)
The son’s feat is observed/identified in cradle. It means:
वर्तमान लक्षणों ( symptoms) से भविष्य का अनुमान ( predicted) लग जाता है। ( Vartmaan lakshanon se bhavishya ka anumaan lag jaata hai.)
The future can be predicted with the present symptoms/ actions.

पिया ( husband) गए परदेश ( abroad) , अब डर काहे ( why) का | ( Piya gaye pardesh, ab dar kaahey ka.) Why to fear since husband has gone abroad. It means.
जब कोई निगरानी ( monitor) करने वाला न हो , तो मौज (fling) उड़ाना। When there is no one to monitor/supervise/watch, enjoy/have fling.
पाप ( sin) का घड़ा डूब ( sink) कर रहता है | ( Paap ka ghadaa doob kar rahta hai.) The pitcher of the sin is bound to sink. It means
पाप जब बढ़ जाता है तब विनाश होता है। (Paap jab badh jaataa hai tab vinaash hota hai.) When sin rises, then destruction takes place.
पानी पीकर जात पूछते हो | ( Paanee peekar jaat poochtey ho.) After drinking water, ask about caste/race. It means
काम करने के बाद उसके अच्छे-बुरे पहलुओं (aspects) पर विचार करना। To review the good/bad aspects after doing the job.
न इधर के रहे, न उधर के रहे | ( na idhar ke rahey, na udhar ke rahey.) Remained neither here, nor there.). It means.
दुविधा में रहने से हानि ही होती है। Duvidha mein rahney se haani hee hotee hai. ) Only harm is there in dilemma.
न अंधे को न्योता देते न दो जने आते | ( Na andhey ko nyotaa detey na do janey aatey.) If you would not have
invited blind, two people would not have come. It means.
गलत फैसला ( decision) करके पछताना ( regretting) । ( Galat faislaa karkey pachhtaana. ) Regretting after making the wrong decision.
