Today Susmita explains how to talking about people waiting on other people or things.

Part 1: Explanation

Often you will need to say that somebody is waiting for somebody else or for something.

For example, you might want to say, “I am waiting for you.”  In Hindi you would do this by saying

“मैं आपका इंतज़ार कर रहा हूँ।“[Male]     = Mei^ aapka intejar kar raha hoo^.

“मैं आपका इंतज़ार कर रही हूँ।“[Female] = Mei^ aapka intejar kar rahi hoo^.

“मुझे आपका इंतज़ार है।”     [M/F]      =Mujhe aapka intejar hai.

Let us look at these sentences pattern in a little more detail.

मैं =I

आपका =For you

इंतज़ार कर रहा /रही  हूँ = Am (be) waiting

(इंतज़ार =Wait [Noun]  कर रहा / रही  हूँ = Doing [M/F])

We add “ रहा / रही “(raha/rahi) in a continuous tense. In present continuous we use हूँ (hoo^), when the subject is “I” and for others it is है (hai^) as the be verb.

Indirect :

मुझे= I

आपका= Your/For you

इंतज़ार = Wait [Noun]

है = is /am /has/have [be verb]

Literally it means “I have your wait (N)” or I have wait (N)for you”

मुझ instead of मैं in indirect sentenses . Then the person that is being waited for has का after it. And then it always ends with इंतज़ार है।.  (This is a phrase means “have wait (N)”)

Part 2: Examples

Let us see some examples:

  1. He is waiting for Ram.

वह राम का इंतज़ार कर रहा है।           Or, उसे आपका इंतज़ार है।

  1. They are waiting for us.

वो/वो लोग हमारा इंतेजर कर रहे हैं।        Or, उनके हमारा इंतज़ार है।

3) She is waiting for the train.

वह ट्रेन का इंतजार कर रही है।             Or, उसे ट्रेन का इंतज़ार है।

4) I am waiting for the lift.

मैं लिफ्ट का इंतज़ार कर रहा / रही(M/F) हूँ। Or, मुझे लिफ्ट का इंतज़ार है।

5) She is waiting for her husband.

वह अपने पति  का इंतज़ार कर रही है।      Or,   उसे अपने पति का इंतज़ार है।

Part 3:  Quiz

Now it is your time to practice.  I will tell you a sentence in Hindi and give you a little time to think of the answer before I tell you.

Hindi -> English

  1. उसे उन का / उन लोगो का इंतज़ार है।

If you said “She is waiting for them” you are correct.

  1. लड़के को अपने दोस्त का इंतज़ार है।

If you said “The boy is waiting for his friend” you are correct.

Now try to think of the Hindi translation for these English sentences:

English ->Hindi

  1. The dog is waiting for food.

If you said ” कुत्ते को खाने का इंतज़ार है। ” you are correct.

4) The girl is waiting for her mom.

If you said ” लड़की को अपने माँ का इंतज़ार है। Or, लड़की अपने माँ का इंतज़ार कर रही है। ” you are correct.

Now you know how to talk about people waiting for other people or things.
