Indian music

Hi, here is Marged Trumper, a scholar in Indian language, music and culture. I’m here to share something about Indian music with you…

Indian classical music is not known and appreciated by everyone in India, as it is the case with Western Classical music in the West, anyway, it retains a strong link with Indian traditions and the Hindu traditional learning system.

Actually, a musician has to learn ‘at the feet’ of a master, a guru गुरु. The word गुरु derives from a Indo-European root meaning ‘important, heavy’ also found in many European languages.

The disciple (shishya, शिष्य), thus follows the guru-shishya-parampara, the tradition (परम्परा) from master (गुरु) to disciple (शिष्य).

The word guru in Hindi, anyway, indicates not only a spiritual guide or a traditional teacher, but all kinds of teachers, even a school teacher.

Indian music

Hello,

My name is Marged Trumper and I am a scholar in Hindi and Indian music and I am here to tell you something about Indian music.

In India there are different kinds of music. In Hindi, the word for music is sangeet.

music = संगीत (sangeet)

Thus, Indian music can be roughly divided into Classical music, folk music and movie songs. Also, Classical music is different in the North and in the South part of the country. Indian classical music from the North is called Hindustaani sangeet, while Indian music from the South is called Karnatak.

Northern Indian classical music = हिन्दुस्तानी संगीत (Hindustaani sangeet)

In Hindi, folk music is called lok geet, film music is referred to as filmi sangeet and classical music in general is referred to as shaastriy sangeet.

folk music = लोक गीत (lok geet)

Indian movie songs = फिल्मी संगीत (filmi sangeet)

Indian classical music = शास्त्रीय संगीत (shaastriy sangeet)

Most of the people in India listen to filmi sangeet, sung in playback by Bollywood actors in the movies, while lok geet is typically played in villages during festivals and rites. Classical music is an ancient tradition now performed by professional artists in institutions, on the national radio and abroad.

The first phase is this (mehndi and sangeet)

I will share my experience of attending an Indian marriage recently. When I reached to place of wedding, I was welcome with lots of love and respect. Everyone was roaming around to serve the guest, there were around 30 people already reached to the wedding place till that time. It was the day when the function of dance was to be done. There was a gathering of around 200 people to come and bless the girl .In India we call it ladies sangeet.sangeet is a program where people sing songs and pray for the good future of the girl. For this day, we, as cousins of the bride prepare special dances and perform at night .There is proper Dj system in every marriage where every one dance. We all got ready for the night and dressed in Indian suits to look the most elegant .decent and beautiful. On this day only, the bride get mehndi on her hands, it is a custom.
