We are thinking of going to India in December 2010, and we want to go ahead and start converting some money from US dollars into Rupees to ensure that we get an OK exchange rate. Any suggestions on ways to do this? Are there US Banks that will let you have an account in Rupee?

(Here is the current US Dollar to Indian Rupee Exchange rate:

Exchanging the money in India directly after arrival should be pretty safe. The two times I did that, the exchange rate was definitely good at the official exchange offices at the airport.
Remember that importing and exporting Rupees into and out of India is officially illegal – Mumbai airport is full of reminders, though I don’t think there will be a problem with a small amount of Rupees.
When exchanging, make sure you don’t get only 500 or 1000 Rupee bills, as it might turn out to be difficult finding someone accepting them.

The other point worth noting is not to be tempted to exchange money with street people. Go through an official place like Thomas Cook. There is a lot of counterfeit money about and there is a government information programme through adverts in papers about how to recognise a counterfeit bill. Lots of features the average tourist should be aware of.

In the novel, Shanteram, which I thoroughly recommend, there is a section on the black market money exchangers which I guess has some truth in it.

be careful of torn bills a lot of Indians refuse to take them , it’s best to check through them in the bank and get them exchanged for bills without even the smallest tear

The tips given by Adrian Gray and Christopher Rauh are trus and correct.Money can be exchanged at international airports and approved money-changers. Nationalized and International banks can also change your foreign currency. However, in smaller towns it may be difficult to change money. Banks are normally closed on Sundays and other Government holidays, but you can always use the ATMs if you have a valid ATM card. Recognized hotels will also be able to change your money at a substantial fee. All international credit cards are widely accepted in India.

Some of the reputed, dependable Indian Banks are: ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Bank of Punjab, Bank of Rajasthan,Catholic Syrian Bank, Centurion Bank, City Union Bank, Dhanalakshmi Bank, Federal Bank , IndusInd Bank, ING Vysya Bank, Karnataka Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Laxmi Vilas Bank, South Indian Bank, etc.

Some of the Foreign Banks In India are : ABN-AMRO Bank, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank,Bank of Ceylon,BNP Paribas Bank,Citi Bank ,Deutsche Bank, HSBC, JPMorgan Chase Bank , Standard Chartered Bank, & Scotia Bank.
