Lol I know google translate I just feel like I’m cheating if I use it. Oookkaaayy. Thank you SO MUCH! That clarifies my lingering confusion. If there isn’t specifically an ”a” (ा) then don’t add one. That absolutely makes sense= DUH to myself. :D

I knew it was too good to be true, lol. Okay… but if I were to conjugate likhana normally it would be ”main likhti hoon?” or ”main likhati hoon?” I thought you took off the -naa ending and added the appropriate ending… does that make the -a go away as well or does that go away because the ”i” combines with the ”rahi?”

Woop woop! Not to rain on your parade, but small correction; (that’s what where here for!) Correct, but 2in1 mix. ”likhti hoon” is present, ”likh rahi hoon” is continuous. Keep going, Fish Bahen!

लिखना, लिखता / लिखती, लिख रहा / रही ; it’s “likhta / likhti” – like “bolna”, “bolta” (chalna, par’na etc)… sometimes that 2d consonant in one syllable is the ‘halant’, no -a sound, even if it’s not written as a half letter. Seems like usually if there is one syllable with 2 consonants: janna, janta; bolna, bolta; *but, peena, khaana,…[Read more]

PS. everyone – use google translate, type in English alphabet, press space and it converts it to devanagari (or urdu etc) – just make sure to check the box ”allow phonetic typing”! अलाऊ फोनेटिक टाइपिंग

Went down to Nashville to see Golmaal 3. It was ridiculous like I knew it would be (but in a good way).

Haha thanks. I think I’m having issues figuring out how quickly I should be learning this stuff. I dug out my old french book and I’m using that as a model for what I should be learning. I need to set deadlines or I’ll just meander around one subject for too long.

Shelly, here is a very fascinating old book from the British Raj period that is cut and dry formal language instruction. There is a practice lesson at the end of each chapter. Most of it is accurate for modern speech but with the added benefit of learning how to discuss, say, muskets and artillery. The only disadvantage to a Hindi learner is that…[Read more]

I own it. It’s lovely. Though I did have to laugh at the depictions of coastal Georgia.
